Big 10 football win total betting odds are a different animal than betting odds to win titles. Win total projections are so much about your strength of schedule and who you play on the road and at home. A good example is Indiana. The Hoosiers have the worst odds to win the Big 10 title (see https://bigjeffsfootball.com/big-ten-football-title-odds) at +40,000, yet their over/under win totals for 2024 is 5.5 wins, which is tied for 12th in the now 18 team Big Ten, and ahead of 4 other Big 10 teams including Michigan State, UCLA, Northwestern and Purdue who all are at 4.5 wins.
Indiana has the number 43rd strength of schedule according to ESPN’s Football Power Index and the 16th rated amongst 18 Big 10 teams. AP Top 25 Poll Displays Indiana’s Most Favorable Schedule in Years
The Hoosiers non-conference schedule includes FIU, Western Illinois and Charlotte – all winnable games. And now that the Big 10 eliminated divisions, IU does not play Penn State this year, though they do still get Michigan and Ohio State in consecutive weeks.
Of the former Pac 12 teams Indiana gets UCLA, who is adjusting to their new coach DeShaun Foster and projected for just 4.5 wins, and Washington whose roster has been gutted from graduation and transfers due to their coaching change from Kalen DeBoer to Jedd Fisch and projected at 6.5 wins, which is a big fall-off from their National Championship appearance and 14 wins last year.
Indiana also has 8 home games and just 4 away games and plays all four Big Ten teams given the lowest Big Ten team win totals of 4.5 wins, including 3 of those 4 games on the road in 4.5 win projected UCLA, Northwestern, and Michigan State, with only 4.5 win projected Purdue at home. Having your easiest games on the road gives you a chance to win a few games you normally would likely lose.

Like how about Wisconsin? 6.5 wins coming into the second year under Luke Fickell when teams usually see a nice pickup in quality of play under a new coach. And the Badgers avoid both Michigan and Ohio State.
